Why Do My Gel/led Nails Always Peel Off? Sometimes Within A Day Or Two? - Why Is My Gel Nail Polish Peeling Off

You spend all that time preparing and go out to buy your favorite colors, only to find that your efforts and money have gone to waste literally the very next day.

Why Do My Gel Nails Peel Off After One Day?

I feel like I get this question all the time, and many of my clients in the Salon report that this is why the reasons why they come to see me in the first place.

Thankfully, there are actually a number of tips, tricks, and ways that can help to prevent your nails from chipping or peeling.

It seems that a lot of Nail Artists are always recommending that you apply Cuticle Oil and Lotion right before you start your manicure.

Whilst I do not disagree with using Cuticle Oil and Lotion – it has many benefits and is great for your overall Nail Health.

What will happen is that it will start to chip and peel off, as it never really set to your nail in the first place.

Instead, what you want to do is save your Cuticle Oil and your lotion until after you’re done with your manicure and it has dried. That is the correct time to apply it.

Even if you’re not putting on Cuticle Oil or Lotion before your manicure and you’re finding that it’s peeling off anyway, you might just have an oily nail plate.

It’s also not a problem and it is not going to prevent you from being able to paint your nails with your favorite nail polishes.

As it sounds, the dehydrator dehydrates your nail plate and it’ll help the polish actually stick to your nail instead of just having an oily surface where your nail polish can just peel off.

Picking At Your Gel Manicure Is Really Bad For Your Nails

What you will need to do is apply your dehydrator just before you would normally paint your nails with your nail polish.

A dehydrator is super important and I absolutely love using it. This is what keeps my manicures lasting between one and two weeks.

You may think that a Base Coat is not required and is an unnecessary cost. You may think so because nobody ever sees it.

A Base and Topcoat are not the same things and you cannot use a Base Coat as a Topcoat or vice versa (a Topcoat as a Base Coat).

There are certain very specific polishes that you can do that with (like Orly sells a base and top coat together) but I would say 99% of the time you definitely should not do that.

In my experience, it tends to be a waste of money to get a duo Base/Topcoat that doubles up and act as one.

Why Is My Nail Polish Peeling Off?

It would be great if you left a comment below letting me know how you got on with these tips and if you have any other methods for making your manicure last longer.

Hey – I’m Jemma – a certified nail technician and manicurist with over fifteen years of hands-on industry experience. I created to share all that I have learned about the nail industry – from the different types of manicures available, suggestions for wear, recommendations for keeping nails strong and healthy, all the way through to providing the best nail salon tips and practices.

I’ve been working in Nail Salons for over 15 years and would love to share my knowledge and experience with what I have learnt along the way.

Why Does My Gel Polish Peel Off?

As such, I created Almond Nails as a means to publish useful, detailed guides and answers to common questions on all things nail design, art and care.Client’s not following aftercare, mismatching products, systems and curing lamps, and purchasing low-quality products are some of the big reasons gel mani’s pop off post manicure.

How annoying is it when 20% of your clients come back into the salon with chipped gel nails, but the other 80% seem to be rock solid?

You might have this problem, and if you are anything like me when I first started nails, an issue with peeling gel polish might be a much more common occurrence.

Does Picking Polish Cause Damage?

Some of my clients would say, ‘why do my gel nails peel off after one day?’ so I decided to do a bit of research.

“Prep is key”; I saw this phrase pop up often, and learning what this meant was the solution to all of my nail tech problems. Although very important, poor prep is not the only reason why gel manicures are popping off, but let’s start here.

Some techniques just aren’t taught, or perhaps you have forgotten the steps after training, which might be why some of your gel nails fall off unannounced!

The reason is that gel nails peel off because oily, smooth nails aren’t going to stick to anything but your own finger.

“If you think about a woodworker, they would scratch the surface of the wood before glueing it to anything else to promote adhesion. This is one of the key aspects of how to make your gel last longer.”

Second step: file the free edge and buff nails (See notes below*). If you don’t file the free edge, oils will remain and cause peeling.

Is Gel Polish Bad For Your Nails?

Fifth step: Ensure you keep your client from touching anything by placing a towel or object on their hand, such as a cotton pad. This ensures your client doesn’t touch their face, which will transfer oils to their just prepped hands!

Removal with acetone will save your clients from picking off their gel nail polish and taking layers of the nail bed with it.

However, poor removal will destroy the strength of the nails, which will, in turn, affect your service and have your clients asking, “Why does my gel polish peel off?”.

Chipped Nail Polish: Surprising Reasons Why Your Polish Keeps Chipping

After 2-3 weeks of wear, the best thing you can do is remove gel nails with acetone. This ensures your clients have strong and healthy beds, but sometimes beauty therapists can rush removal due to clients being late.

Rushing the removal process due to late arrivals will result in a weakened nail plate. This is because you haven’t allowed enough time for the acetone to fully penetrate the hard polish, ensuring it peels off easily.

You will then have to take further action to get the polish off. Scraping and buffing to achieve a polish-free nail will come at a cost to the strength of the nail surface. This weakens the nails as you will be taking layers of nail plate off when doing so. This results in nails that are more likely to bend, and guess what bends with it? The polish. This will eventually tear the gel, and the polish will peel.

Awful Nail Habits Destroying Your Nails, And How To Break Them Now

“Gel polish doesn’t ruin your natural nails. However, poor removal, harsh preparation and clients peeling off their gel manicures will guarantee to ruin natural nails over time.”

Note: Use a remover that is gentle on the nails. I found a considerable difference in the chalkiness (white appearance after removal). A remover that isn’t as harsh on the nails will not dry out the nails as much as pure acetone. Dry nails will become brittle and break off more easily.

If your client’s gel nail polish is not coming off with acetone, it may be hard gel, in which case you will have to buff the gel off, making sure to leave some still left on to prevent further nail damage.

I Don't Know What To Do, Friends. I Keep Peeling My Gel Nail Polish Off. Any Tips?

Damage to natural nail bed from poor removal of gel polish. This kind of damage can also come from the client’s peeling or picking off gel polish.

I did all the prep correctly but still had issues with gel staying on the nails and found that this way worked best for me to eradicate chipping nails.

Curing times: I applied a thin layer of polish and capped the free edge, but that still didn’t stop the gel nails from chipping and peeling.

Even though I shook up the bottles and resorted to placing them in between my knees to warm them up during prep, I found that the base coat kept getting thicker with every use.
